Census ACS comparisons: match survey periods, variables and geographies
Select comparable ACS estimates and retain geography codes, margins of error and dataset vintages.
Choose the dataset and vintage
The Census API provides dataset-specific variable and geography metadata. Start with the survey product and year, then verify variable definitions and supported geographic predicates. Keep geography codes as strings so leading zeroes survive export; keep the display name alongside the code.
Compare like periods
Census guidance recommends comparing ACS five-year estimates with non-overlapping five-year estimates, and not comparing one-year estimates directly with five-year estimates. A five-year product is a period estimate, not a measurement only of its final year. Geographic boundaries and variables can change between releases.
A practical example
Suppose you want to describe change in a small area. Before computing a difference, choose two suitable non-overlapping periods, confirm the area definition in both, and check the same population universe and variable meaning. If boundaries changed, report that limitation or obtain a documented crosswalk; matching names alone is insufficient.
Retain uncertainty
ACS estimates come with margins of error. Preserve the estimate, its associated uncertainty fields and any annotations. A numerical difference is not automatically evidence of a meaningful change. Avoid deriving a significance claim from rounded headline values or assuming every negative numeric marker is an ordinary measurement.
What to share in a correction
Include the dataset path/vintage, variable identifiers, geography predicates and the specific definition that changed. Share a minimal public example, with no API key or personal records. A useful answer says which comparison is supported and which is not; it does not just produce a percentage difference.
